Radon Mitigation System Installed in Home with Elevated 6 pCi/L Radon Level
After living in several homes with radon mitigation systems, these homeowners understood the importance of addressing elevated radon levels. When testing showed a reading of 6 pCi/L in their current home, they decided to take action, especially with their son living in the basement where radon can accumulate. The project includes replacing and sealing the sump beneath the stairs, with a radon extraction point in the northeast corner of the home. The system will run up and out from that location, and a fan cover will be installed because of its proximity to the street. With electrical access nearby, the installation is designed to address the home's radon concerns while keeping the system practical and discreet.

High Radon Levels Lead Iowa Couple to Install Two-Point Mitigation System
After living in their home for five years, a couple decided to test for radon after a parent recently discovered elevated levels and completed radon mitigation. Using an electronic detector borrowed from their parents, they found radon levels of 12 pCi/L, well above the EPA action level. Although the home had one basement chamber, two extraction points were recommended to effectively address the elevated radon levels. A customized two-point radon mitigation system was installed to draw radon from beneath the home and safely vent it outdoors.

High Radon Levels Prompt Homeowners to Mitigate Before Selling
After building their home in 1994, these homeowners are preparing to sell and move closer to their children and grandchildren in the Des Moines area. Following their realtor’s advice, they decided to address radon before listing the property. Two recent charcoal test kits averaged approximately 10 pCi/L, well above the EPA’s recommended action level of 4 pCi/L. With their grandchildren spending time in the home regularly, creating a healthier indoor environment was another important motivation. The project calls for a single-point radon mitigation system routed from the sump toward the northeast side of the home, just behind the garage, with a sealed sump lid. This proactive step helps address radon concerns before the home changes hands.

For this young couple, creating a healthier home environment carries extra meaning as they navigate life with a 9-year-old daughter who has cancer. Wanting to take proactive steps for their family's well-being, they decided to address the radon levels in their home and see how much they could improve them. The planned radon mitigation system will run up and out through the north side of the house near the air conditioning unit, where electrical access is nearby. The homeowners also plan to address the crawlspace after the initial installation and monitor the radon readings afterward.
